Tatum
We arrived in Seattle yesterday. We were looking forward to seeing snow, but it is all gone here at Jill's. Monna still has snow and got some more this morning. A result of her living in the Puget Sound Convergence Zone, for all you weather freaks. We were excited to see everyone especially Tatum. She opened her presents and wanted to wear the sweater. She is still the cutest.

Awesome Intelligence
I posted a link to Paul Krugman's blog (over to the right). He is this year's Nobel Prize winner for economics and is advising the Obama economic team. He actually writes about economics and economic policy in a way that is understandable. He is of the Keynesian school of economics. Check him out if you want to find cogent reasons for a massive stimulus. Trickle down didn't really work so well. Let's try trickle up for awhile.
If you don't agree that a massive stimulus is needed, maybe he can convince you otherwise. If not, that's okay. We'll see what works.

Canton Scrapes the Sky
The Empire State Building was finished during the Great Depression. It was seen as a symbol of optimism in a very bleak time. Not to be outdone, Canton has its own symbol of optimism during this very uncertain time. Okay, it is over a 100 stories shorter. And, it is taking a grand total of two iron workers and a crane operator to erect the skeleton (or whatever what do you call it).
Anyway, those of you who have visited, may remember the "hole" in the ground by our favorite hoagie shop. That's where the 3 story structure is being built. According to our dry cleaner, who is also a neighbor of the "hole", it's been empty since around 1950 when the big fire swept through downtown.
In all seriousness, I applaud the company that is taking the risk and building in downtown Canton. Of course, it will be on the Canton City tour for all of our visitors. I'll keep you updated.

Pop Quiz
I try to stay current with pop music. However, most of it bores me. I do like this song and it is current.
I do have a question. Is, "If I were a boy" correct grammatically? Bill and I discussed it yesterday and thought that it probably is correct, but it still doesn't sound quite right to my ear. Any thoughts?

Tree Update
It's a Start
We got our tree yesterday and had planned to decorate it last night. Bill's niece, Lori, was going to help during her visit. Instead, we ended up crashing a party at our friends Jeff and Cory's house. So, here's the state of the tree today. Perhaps, it should be about the process this year instead of the result. Tonya reminded me that they were here last year when we decorated the tree after going to a party at Bruce's. Bruce was a fellow Friday night diner at El Caporal. We still are mourning the loss of El Caporal. Last year we ended up with just lights on the tree as we stopped decorating after Bob and Tonya left. If past is prologue, will the tree be bare? Stayed tuned...

A Surprising Calm
I have spent the last eight years bouncing from disbelief to fear to anger to sorrow. The country that always seemed to have a place for me and other outsiders seemed to grow increasingly unfriendly and downright dangerous. With torture, wiretapping, extraordinary rendition, climate change denial, the justice department full of political apparatchiks, family planning by religious fiat, war crimes, endless war and just old fashioned meanness, I found hope and grace difficult to hold on to. I was raised and educated to think and form opinions about politics and current events. While I was often in opposition to the powers that be, I always felt that change was just around the corner and that the people had a voice. Over the last eight years, that feeling of possibility diminished. Dread and fear replaced it. That is what made me feel that this election was about the life or death of this great experiment we call The United States. And, on election night, instead of an overwhelming sense of joy, I felt an awkward calm. One huge sigh of relief. Hope really can triumph over fear. Openness can replace repression. Our leaders can be the brightest, most curious and competent among us. The common good does have a place in our society. It's just the beginning, but what a great one it is. Many have said the adults are back in charge. I would like to think that a new genius pool like the one that started this country has manifested itself from the audacious will and hope of the American people. Yes, WE did it.
Albeit with a measured and healthy skepticism of those in power, we can now concentrate on the business of our daily lives.
Peace.

Winter Olympics 2010
We just got back from a long weekend in Whistler. We visited some of the places where the winter olympic events will take place in Whistler. Whistler will host the nordic and alpine events. The ski jump was amazing. It made me really excited for the olympics. Tickets are already on sale, however they are pricey. Think we can use our "family connections" to get tickets? Are we still planning a reunion? Here is a slideshow of the photos I took.

Hi everyone,
We are in Izmir, Turkey and having a great time. We have seen just incredible sites, we can't even begin to capture some of it. OUr biggest challenge is english language television. Can't find much we can understand and watching Tool Time in Turkish loses something.
Hate to tell Jim and Bill but we purchased a Turkish carpet yesterday. Hand made. I'm going to try to post a picture, but if it doesn't work...you just get this text.

Voting
Okay, I haven't been posting much because I am completely obsessed with the election. Not a bad thing.
Voting was always a big deal in our house. Mom was a poll worker for many years. I can remember a couple other things about elections. Mom and Dad always joked about canceling each other's vote. That would make dad a....Democrat in those days. Also, I can remember dad talking about writing in Ken Arrington for fire chief. I have always remembered that and always manage to cast a few write-in votes, Bill Grant for some judge position, Carrie Budd for Cherokee County Court Clerk. Patty Baker is the GOP candidate for County Clerk and I can't stand Patty Baker. That's a story for another day. Cherokee County gives me many opportunities to vote write-in as there are a lot of unopposed races.
The first time I voted was for President in 1976. I voted for Georgia native Jimmy Carter. Foreshadowing?
So, vote, regardless for whom you vote. It's important. But, if you would like my and other family member's opinion, go to Canton Ga Blue. Just beware. It's very very very partisan.

I went to Aiken on Saturday and spent the night. Dad got home from the hospital on Friday. He looks good, but thinner. The difference from a week ago was very noticeable. We went out to dinner both Sat and Sun. His energy level was fine. He was going back to the doctor today. I didn't hear from him today.

LUCINDA!
What could be better than a new CD from Lucinda Williams, the singer songwriter goddess. While I have only listened to the entire CD once. (After all, I have an election to obsesses over) My initial reaction is, of course, the woman can do now wrong. There are a few fun, "oh, this would be good to play at the next party" songs. We would expect no less. There is also the use of the f word at just the right time. It's a signature for our dear lady. However, the song that slayed me upon first listen was "Heaven Blues" It's not up on youtube yet, but when it is, I'll post it. Spare words, but awesome singing and music.
Heaven Blues
-Gonna make it right, gonna make it right up in heaven
-Gonna see my mother, gonna see my mother up in heaven
-Gonna talk to God, gonna talk to God up in heaven
-Gonna make my heaven, gonna make my heaven, gonna make my own heaven
-Gonna make it right, gonna make it right when I get to heaven

Ted News
Dad went into the hospital last night (10/13) with fluid on his lungs. I spoke with him a couple hours ago. He mentioned that Monna called him earlier today. When I saw him Sunday he seemed a little tired, but at 82 it's hard to tell if that is a problem.
He'll get out of the hospital when the excess fluid is gone. When I talked to him, he didn't know exactly when that would be. He is in Aiken Regional Hospital - (803) 641-5000
It is certainly a manageable problem.
Get well soon!

Big Pumpkin Goes to the Patch
Some of you may have seen Tatum's pumpkin patch visit on her blog. Jim got jealous, so we had to take him to the patch to find a pumpkin today:
Jim and Bill went on an a great pumpkin adventure filled with scarecrows, really big pumpkins, hay rides and corn maizes. We went out to Cagle Dairy Farms in Canton for this fun adventure. Jim was excited to get some fresh country air. Jim picked out a "Tatum" size pumpkin with the biggest stem. Afterward, we went to Beetles BBQ for lunch and then to Target for some unnecessary plastic objects and polar bear pajamas for The Jim! Here are the videos from our big adventure:

Summers Gone By
One of our friends works at the Cherokee Historical Society. Recently, she was archiving some old photos and found this article and photos of our pool and the old pool house that used to be out back. We have heard about the pool house that use to be there and found the old concrete deck when we began the renovation, but these are the first photos and information from Old Doc Johnston and his wife, Maxine. They sound like quite the stylish couple. We closed the pool for the season last week. Here's to another summer gone by...

Thanks to all for the support and prayers!
I added this as a comment to Jim's prior post, but thought I'd post it out for everyone (even the non-comment readers) to see!
That is is a great post! To quote Theone as she listened to the song "I can just see him walking around". And at the end she says "And then jump in the fire".
Rick, thank you for adding Theone to the Refuah prayer list! And thank you for sharing the prayer and what it means. We really appreciate that and the prayers of the Beth David community!
Bill, so far...no gum in the toilet...but I'll watch her closely.
She is quite the patient let me tell you.
Again, thanks to everyone.

Well, Jim and I are going to see Loretta Lynn tonight at the Cobb Energy Center! It should be interesting. She is an institution, so we thought we should see her before it's too late. She's 73 and may have to do some of the songs sitting down because of her back surgery and severe pain. She lives a country song I guess! I will let Jim report back. First Dolly Parton, now Loretta. Jim is going country!

NO CANTON WEST!!!
Well, I'll be damned. It's a new day in Canton, Georgia. Tonight, the city council voted 4 to 3, with the Mayor casting the deciding vote, to deny annexation of 901 acres into the city. Once they denied the annexation, there was no need to vote on the rezoning and master plan. And, apparently there is no legal action that can be taken when a city decides not to annex land into the city. Everyone is in shock that the tide has turned. I don't think anyone thought we could beat the money men/women. Surprise. Surprise. People power works!
Here are a couple photos from the meeting. There were probably 250 people there, if not more.

We were very sad when our favorite Mexican restaurant, El Caporal, closed in July. Many of you have joined us there. We had dinner at a new, for us, Mexican Taqueria tonight. It seems very authentic and the food was great. They only serve beer and wine so no margaritas which might make scratch it for Friday nights. Anyway, here are some pics.

Backyard Nature
Here's some backyard nature stuff.
This spider's web is in the Atlantic Blue Cedar in the back yard. The white zig-zag is part of the web. Bizarre.
To the right of my cheap outdoor lounge chair there were several ants trying to move what looked like a grub worm. It was fascinating watching them.
In front of my cheap outdoor lounge chair was this small iridescent creature. A skink.

Back in touch
Mel and I took a few trips last month. Mel wanted to get away before he was laid up after his knee surgery. Our first trip was on the motorcycle to the Oregon coast. Yes, on the motorcycle. I enjoyed the trip more than I thought I would. The weather was perfect and the coast is beautiful. We drove through the Redwoods and came back and spent the night at Grants Pass. Mel grew up there so there was a little bit of nostalgia for him. Next, we drove up to Whistler, via Seattle, for a week. Boy, has Whistler ever changed since I was up there skiing many years ago. It is huge! We walked around a lot every day and still didn't cover all of it. Landscaping and hanging flowers baskets everywhere. Lots of people! We took the half hour gondola ride up the mountain and had dinner. It was awesome! Spent a couple of nights visiting in Seattle on our way back to Bend. We took another trip over to Grants Pass and down the Oregon coast to Brookings. This time we drove the car. No more travels for awhile. Mel had surgery on July 30th. He didn't complain much in the hospital. I think the cute, young nurses that took such good care of him had a lot to do with it. Most people are in the hospital for 4 - 5 days, but Mel did so well that they released him in 3. He had a walker at first, but isn't even using it anymore. He is a tough old bird. He has talked to the doctor about doing the other knee next year.

Mountain Garden
We went up to Blue Ridge, GA last night to see our friends Steve and Amado. Amado's a great gardener. Here is a picture of his garden. The vines are gourds and giant pumpkins. He always grows huge pumpkins. It's an organic garden.

From Lucinda to George
Last Friday we saw Lucinda Williams. Last night we took Bill's niece, Lori, to see George Michael. She's a huge fan. I have always liked him. It was a great show. Better than I expected. Everyone was on their feet most of the time. That boy can entertain!

The Showroom - Pre-opening
Here's a short video shot by Bill on Sunday prior to the opening of the show.
Las Vegas Update
We are on our way back to ATL tomorrow. The showroom (designed by us) and rugs received positive reviews. They actually wrote orders today. Here are just a couple pictures. One of the showroom entrance and one of one of our rugs on the floor under the bench. You'll be able to buy that one in about 15 Costco California stores in August. I'll post some better pictures later.
