That Dam Monna

Monna and I had a nice visit. We saw Get Smart. So So. We went to Downtown Kitchen for dinner Tuesday night. And, of course, Monna got the Dam tour. She left today to see Dad and Elsie in Aiken. We'll expect a post from her!

Congratulations to Venessa Christian!!

There is a very impressive write-up in the last Bemidji State newsletter about a young senior soprano from Warroad. It is about her debut in Rome in a major role in "Don Giovanni". Amazing!! GO VANESSA!!!

Cooler Weather - Finally!

The heat wave has ended! We had four straight days over 100. It was pretty miserable and the only way to escape was to hit the beach (nobody in Los Osos has a/c). Since it cooled off today, we were able to have some dog play time. Sandy, the lab, is becoming quite the Frisbee player. His favorite is still swimming through the waves to get the ball, though. Happy summer, everyone!

Monna Arrived

Monna arrived yesterday. We watched MI-5 last night. If Monna gets back from Atlanta in time, we may go see Get Smart. The reviews are certainly mixed on Get Smart. Anyone seen it yet?

Link Fixed - No seems to get more attention

The first big planning and zoning issue is before our committee. I voted no to delay the public hearing. Citizens showed up based on the notice in the paper. Then the developer requested a delay. However, no notice was given to the public. Click to read the article.

Landscaping Saved by Elsie

I always plant large elephant ears in the front circle. They come up again each year, but I never have enough patience to wait. However, this year I couldn't find any locally which left the front circle terribly naked. Anyway, Elsie found some in Aiken. I picked them up yesterday and planted them today. Now, I can show my face again at the garden club. I actually don't belong to the garden club. Anyway, a big thanks to Elsie.

Here is before. I actually took this picture to show this strange "weed". I think it may be a walking onion. Anyway, the flower is kinda cool. I think I will treat it as a flower not a weed.

Graduation

Today was graduation. It's rather anti-climatic, because we still have 5 weeks of the program, but it was a nice (and short) ceremony. So, come mid-July I'll have in M.A. in Educational Leadership and an administrative credential. I'll be ecstatic to be done, it has been a stressful year. The first picture is before the ceremony (doesn't my mom look amazing?) and the second one is Dr. Petersen hooding me.

Where's the Beef?

Jim went down to see his dad today for Father's Day, so
you know what that means! Bacon Cheese Burger Baby!

The End of Era

Nancy (El Caporal) told us tonight that they are closing CCH within 45 days. They may open a new restaurant down the street, but that remains to be seen. It's truly the end of an era. You still have a chance to go there if you visit us within the next 45 days. I guess we'll have to move on to a new Friday night routine.

Music must accompany most transitions. Don't you think?

Tell us your favorite CCH story.

Strangely Effected

by Tim Russert's death. He seemed to always be on the TeeVee. He often drove me crazy as I thought he echoed the establishment line too much, but he did make me think instead of just react.

Home In Canton

We made it home just before the severe weather hit. A lot of rain and wind. The storm came from the Southeast which is very rare. No damage. Just the usual rain underneath the kitchen door.

My NeoCon Review.

Chicago

We arrived Saturday and didn't really do anything. Sunday we shopped a little and then went to dinner with a couple friends from Kansas City. We ended up at Sidetrack a local Chicago establishment where they play show tunes on Sunday night and the crowd sings along. Here are Bea Arthur and Angela Lansbury singing Bosom Buddies. I couldn't help but think about Theone when I saw Maude.

Today, we walked the show. Here is a table from the Knoll showroom. I think it is a classic table reinterpreted with pseudo-retro colors. Knoll has wonderful classic products. A great company with a rich history.

On our way back to the hotel, we were detoured by the filming of a Johnny Depp movie. That's the rumor anyway. We didn't see Depp. We did see some people in 20's clothes and old cars.

That's all for now. Tonight is our "Foodie" dining night. We are eating at Sepia.

Dam

Here's the latest. I don't know how long the link will last as it doesn't appear that the Cherokee Ledger News provides individual links to stories.

Construction on the dam has been completed for the Hickory Log Creek Reservoir.

The city of Canton recently was granted a permit by the state Department of Natural Resources to continue filling up the reservoir, and all of the phases for the reservoir are on schedule to be completed by January 2009.

Mayor Gene Hobgood said he thinks the reservoir, which borders the Bluffs of Technology Park in Canton, is a good addition to the city’s water system.

“We’re glad it’s completed and glad it’s getting filled up,” he said. “We’re hoping that it will get filled up and the rainfall will be adequate to allow us to pump from the river and finish filling it up.”

Cole Blackwell, reservoir manager, said the permit gives clearance to fill the reservoir beyond the elevation it currently is at, which is about 960 feet above sea level.

“We can fill the next 20 feet as quickly as we can. Then we’ll have to hold that elevation for 28 days and then we can go on with our next 20 feet. It follows that same pattern until we’re full,” he said.

Blackwell said the city recently awarded a bid for the pipeline project, which will link the dam to the pump station on Riverstone Parkway and allow water to flow from the Etowah River. He said the project should begin within a month and that construction should take between six and eight months to complete. He also said the pump station project is under way and should be completed in October.

“We hope to have all the phases done by late January 2009,” he said. “If all of the phases are finished timely and we get average rainfall, we’ll have it filled up late December of 2009.”

According to Blackwell, the city currently is not using the reservoir right now, but it could this summer if it needed to if the Etowah River decreases below a certain level.

“There are about 300 million gallons in here right now, and, on average, the city uses somewhere around 3 million gallons a day, so we’ve got about 100 days of reserve supply,” he said.

The city of Canton and Cobb County-Marietta Water Authority (CCMWA) are splitting the costs of the joint reservoir project, with 75 percent from the CCMWA and 25 percent from the city. Both entities are to share in the daily draws of water during dry periods. While CCMWA is to receive 75 percent of 44 million gallons released during droughts, the city can withdraw 11 million gallons.

It's a new America. A better America. A more inclusive America. Now the fun will really begin.
